One of the biggest questions nonprofits ask themselves is “how can I better engage my supporters online?” Even seasoned nonprofits struggle with this question. Our long-time client, the League of Women Voters, is an organization that is almost 100 years old, and they still regularly review their online strategies.
For the past several years, we’ve worked with our friends at Avalon Consulting to support LWV’s mission and outreach strategies by facilitating and organizing online strategies as part of our campaign implementation services. Avalon works with the League to develop strategies, content, and design for new campaigns (check out their amazing success stories). Then, we provide the technical support to implement these plans and bring their great campaigns to life online. We use Salsa to build dynamic and engaging emails, to create donation pages and other forms, and to schedule and deploy the campaigns to their supporters.
Inviting new conversations
LWV needed a way to engage supporters in meaningful conversations about their work. We built survey and donation forms to support a supporter engagement survey.
In July 2018 and January 2019, LWV supporters received a short survey of about 10 questions. Supporters first answered questions about the state of our democracy and voting laws. Next, they also shared their thoughts on how LWV’s work helps to make voters’ voices heard in our political system.
Once completed, the survey redirected to a donation form. Were invested survey responders more likely to donate? Well, no. Donation rates were about the same as a standard appeal campaign, but the survey was a cultivation touchpoint, inviting supporters to share thoughts on topics related to LWV’s mission, as well as providing valuable feedback from their supporters. In addition, this is an important lesson that even non-fundraising messages can result in increased donations.
Identifying communication needs
LWV’s email campaign templates worked well for their fundraising and general communication needs, but they needed a way to send rapid response messages more efficiently. They wanted to send important messages without having to worry about additional graphics, buttons, or formatting.
We created a rapid response template for LWV to more easily respond quickly to news from Congress or state legislatures. By paring down the League’s email template, they can create rapid response emails much more quickly, helping not only with quick turnaround times on responses, but also focusing their email content so they can effectively engage supporters with the important news of the moment.
We love supporting the work LWV does by helping them communicate more effectively with their supporters online. Need some support for your online fundraising? Learn more about our campaign support services or contact us for more information.
