Canine Companions enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support.

When we first began working with our friends at Canine Companions for Independence, they were stuck in an old Luminate Online site, and were eager to move to a more user-friendly, flexible content management system. The new site was “designed” to look exactly like the old one: they didn’t want to upset their users with a sudden appearance change. But over time, the organization realized that it was time for a rebrand, and they took the opportunity to also revisit the look and feel of the site.

This two-step technological revolution included:

  • Moving content from their old Luminate site and organizing articles into distinct post types for events, people, news, and stories so that they could be easily sorted and searched using faceted search.
  • Adding a custom role for “Puppy Raiser Coordinator” to restrict some users to content specifically from their region.
  • Custom landing pages for chapters and Gala fundraisers.
  • A very rare example of an accessible slideshow that uses an accessible tab list thanks to the Unlimited Elements plugin.
  • Pantheon hosting.
  • Blog subscription functionality using the Better Notifications plugin and add-ons.

And because accessibility is of vital importance to the organization’s constituents, we spent extra time ensuring the site meets WCAG 2.1 requirements.

We’ve been honored to work with Canine Companions on many projects:
