Voice of OC is the go-to news source for investigative and public policy news in Orange County, California. Since 2010, this media organization has been running its dynamic enterprise out of an old Town News site built in Blox. The old proprietary system didn’t allow the editorial team much freedom in how articles were posted, and required time-intensive editing for simple tasks like adding videos and PDFs. The dated styling didn’t reflect the cutting edge investigative journalism Voice of OC is known for, and worst of all, the site wasn’t mobile responsive.
We were thrilled to help Voice of OC join other cutting-edge investigative media outlets in Project Largo, the open-source WordPress theme designed specifically for news publishers. The site is now proudly hosted by the Investigative News Network, and Voice of OC will benefit from improvements to the Largo theme in the future.
Customizations to the Largo theme included additional widget areas to allow Voice of OC to fully customize and easy change their masthead, and the installation of Disqus commenting to allow them to moderate discussions easily.
Editorial staff now have greater power over creative additions like photos, infographics, and interactive content, and can trust the new architecture and search engine to help its readers find what they need. On top of it all, the new site is much better at encouraging readers to donate.
Through careful project managment and meticulous content migration, we brought over 4,000 articles, 1,500 photos, and 400 documents from the ancient proprietary system.
And thanks to the the fact that WordPress and the Largo theme are both open-source, the publication has more flexibility to grow the site in the future.
