Open Doors for Multicultural Families (ODMF) is the only organization in the United States serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities within immigrant and refugee communities. When ODMF partnered with our nonprofit web design team, they were in the middle of a $12 million capital campaign and struggling with an outdated Joomla website that made updates difficult and failed to effectively engage donors or showcase their programs.
They needed a complete nonprofit website redesign—one that could support two very different audiences, meet strict accessibility standards, and provide multilingual access for the communities they serve.
The Challenge: Accessibility, Multilingual Support, and Donor Engagement
ODMF’s existing Joomla site presented several challenges:
- Difficult content management and slow updates
- Limited accessibility and compliance issues
- No effective way to serve multilingual users
- Poor donor engagement during an active capital campaign
The new website needed to clearly serve:
- Clients and families seeking disability services and resources
- Donors and supporters looking to invest in ODMF’s mission
At the same time, the site had to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards and scale with the organization’s long-term growth.
Our Approach: WordPress Nonprofit Web Design Built for Growth
We approached this nonprofit website redesign with a focus on flexibility, accessibility, and ease of use. We rebuilt the site on WordPress using the Blocksy theme, giving ODMF a modern, user-friendly platform their team could manage independently.
Our process included:
- Comprehensive discovery and site mapping to understand how different user groups navigate the site
- A modern, accessible design system balancing clarity, warmth, and functionality
- Thoughtful content structure to support both service-seekers and donors
To support ODMF’s diverse community, we implemented Google Translate, providing multilingual access across the site and expanding their ability to serve immigrant and refugee families.
Joomla to WordPress Content Migration
A key technical challenge was migrating content from ODMF’s custom-built Joomla website. We collaborated closely with their previous developer to create a programmatic migration strategy, ensuring content accuracy and efficiency.
After migration, our team spent significant time on manual content layout and refinement, ensuring every page translated beautifully into the new WordPress platform while maintaining accessibility and readability.
Nonprofit Integrations and Custom Functionality
Beyond the visual redesign, we implemented critical tools to streamline ODMF’s operations and improve donor engagement:
- FormAssembly integrations for referrals and event registrations
- Click & Pledge donation integration to support fundraising and capital campaign efforts
- A resource tracking system connected to Salesforce, providing real-time insights into guide downloads and geographic usage
We also provided SEO optimization and AI-assisted content development for ten key pages, helping ODMF clearly communicate their unique value to both donors and families seeking services.
The Result: An Accessible, Multilingual Nonprofit Website
The final result is a WCAG 2.1 Level AA–compliant nonprofit website that successfully balances accessibility, multilingual support, and donor engagement. ODMF’s team now has the tools they need to manage content confidently and adapt the site as their programs evolve.
Despite timeline challenges around their annual fundraiser, the project stayed on track. Andrea, ODMF’s Director of Development, was an enthusiastic and collaborative partner throughout the process.
Most importantly, the new site positions ODMF to tell their story more effectively—centering the community they serve rather than just the organization itself, which was a core goal from the beginning. The website now provides a strong digital foundation for ODMF’s ongoing capital campaign and future growth.
