Colorful, Animated and Secure Website Helps Reduce Food Waste in LA

Do you know how much delicious fruit goes to waste every year in LA? It’s a lot, thanks to all those lovely fruit trees growing happily in people’s yards! Now, thanks to the efforts of LA Fruit Share, a lot more of that fruit is getting to people who can enjoy it before it goes bad.

LA Fruit Share is a collaboration between Food Forward, Fruitstitute, and Salad for President. This biannual event was created to connect backyard fruit-growers, aka “fruit givers” with local people who want fruit, aka “fruit seekers”. After signing up for the event, participants set up a fruit stand in their front yard on the selected date and share their extra fruit with neighbors who find them using event maps on the LA Fruit Share website.

LA Fruit Share contacted us because the event has gotten so popular that they had decided to have it more often and involve as many people as possible, and they needed a more robust and secure website to make that happen.

Using the Blocksy theme, we met the challenge of their tight timeline and created a beautiful website with eye-catching colors, fun animations, and a secure members section. In addition to increased security, the new site also includes a map that participants can see only on the day of the event and functionality for fruit-growers to be able to adjust their own pins on the map so they can be sure they’ll be found easily by fellow fruit traders at the event.

* Update: the Fruit Share program ended and the website was closed in July of 2023.

  • I'm so glad that we got the chance to work with the Cornershop team for this website rebuild. You all were amazing, and we really appreciated how organized and responsive you were in pulling together the threads and leading us all through. The new site looks awesome and we're finally getting to do things that we've been talking about doing for years and years.
